Low cost hydrogen production through proton exchange membrane electrolysis
Finance Agreement no. 703/24.07.2006
Renewable sources of energy can be directly converted into electricity. But for storage and distribution purposes, there is a need for an energy carrier. Hydrogen seems today to be the most promising candidate.
This light molecule can be obtained from various earth-abundant chemical sources such as water and from electricity using electrolysis. Water electrolysis has therefore a key role to play in the hydrogen economy.
In particular, the Solid Polymer Electrolyte (SPE) technology which is considered in the Hy-Prod PEMEL project offers the safer and most effective way of producing electrolytic hydrogen.
