Validation and application of new methods for isotopic and pesticides residues analysis from drinking water and beverages, in concordance with the Europeans Standards in quality food control, ANALIZOPEST
Finance Agreement no 268/2006
The project objective is the development of an analytical framework for European standards implementation in pesticides residues analysis from drinking water and wines and use of mass spectrometry (MS) to determine the ratios of
stable isotopes, to prove the botanical and geographical origin of a wide variety of foodstuffs - and therefore, to authenticate and eliminate fraud.
To ensure the food quality and safety is a requirement, which must be fulfilled for the integration in U.E.(Commission Regulation (EEC) No. 2676/1990 of September 17th, 1990 determining Community methods for the analysis of wines
(O.J. L272, 03.10.1990); Council Directive 98/83/EC of 3 November 1998 on the quality of water intended for human consumption (O.J. L330 of 05.12.1998); Commission Regulation (EC) No. 2729/2000 of December 14th, 2000
laying down detailed implementing rules on controls in the wine sector). Multi-isotope analysis, the determination of isotope ratios by mass spectrometry, is becoming increasingly used in the food industry and by national food
control laboratories as a method of authenticating both raw materials and finished products. Coupling mass spectrometer with gas chromatograph is used for quantitative and qualitative analysis of traces of pesticides from food.
The activities of this project are concentrating towards definition the procedures for IRMS and GC/MS analytical methods, to create a new laboratory for these applications. This achievement ensures our participation to Framework Program 7,
"Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Biotechnology" (2007-2013).
The European Union has officially adopted the used of isotope analysis as a means of controlling sugar addition in wines. Those analyses were successful implemented in the Member States wine producer, considerably reducing the financial
losses which the Community had incurred due to over - chaptalisation. Governments want to protect consumer health, eliminate unfair competition, safeguard markets and optimize tax income.
