Pilot plant for tritium and deuterium separation

Based on the researches developed, INC-DTCI Rm. Valcea has ratificated to laboratory scale the deuterium and tritium separation technology from deuteriated and tritiated water, using a mixed method: isotopic exchanger catalyzed and cryogenic distillation.
The purpose of this researches is to obtain technological data and functional characteristics of specific equipments, to design the detritiation plant of heavy water used in CANDU reactors and to implement the studies and experiments specific for fusion reactors, JET and ITER, using the facilities of this plant.
The main target of the experimental pilot plant is to esteblish the detritiation technology of CANDU reactor moderator and to certify the equipments specific for cryogenic domain and tritiated mediums.
Experimental Pilot Plant for Tritium and Deuterium Separation is unic in Europe if we reffer to semiindustrial pilot scale and, also, there is only few plants of this type in world being open to national and international scientific comunity in hydrogen isotopes domain, with application to tritium and deuterium separation.
We can say that the pilot plant ICSI Rm. Valcea is constituted into european installation with applications in European Commission EUROATOM/JET programs, through the wide tender of participation in the nuclear fusion domain for the institute experts and the participation with specific materials for the fusion domain (catalyzers, packing, cryogeny, purification, deuterium gas, tritium production). The pilot plant is opened to european research through the getting of experiments for fusion program (ITER) and represent the base for colaboration with research institutes in nuclear fusion domain like: Nuclear Research Centre from MOL, Belgium, Forschungszentrum - Tritium Laboratory from Karlsruhe, Germany, Institute of Atomic Physics from St. Petesburg, Rissia and AECL Canada. Also, if we reffer to fusion program ITER, the pilot plant can provide technical assistance for design of heavy water detritiation system using CATIA software, version 5. Pilot plant for deuterium and tritium separation is on the list of nuclear plants monitored by Agency for Atomic Agency from Vienna, being part to repeating and control systems of nuclear quaranties.
Pilot plant is concern to working programme and technical assistance project organized by AIEA Vienna in activity domain of pilot plant.
Experimental pilot plant for deuterium and tritium separation has obtained in december 2004 the authorization for put into operation from National Council of Nuclear Activities Control (CNCAN). Begining with 2005 year will be enter for put into operation tests in conformity with accepted programs by this forum. The first beneficiary of this technology is SC Nuclear Electrica SA, Bucharest, CNE Cernavoda Unit 1, yhe problem of great interest for experts. So, it is elaborated a work program until to 2011 for getting of detritiation unit from CNE PROD Cernavoda, Unit 1.
